Negative Reviewers on Amazon

10/6/2018

I’ve encountered something that has greatly surprised me. People who give horrible, and I mean really horrible reviews repeatedly. I received 2 – 1 star really bad reviews on my book, Operation Protected Angel. When I read the first, it was like a knife through my heart that someone felt so strongly against my book that they would title the review Piss Poor. When clicking on the reviewer’s name though, I saw that she had 5 reviews over the last few years (I am assuming there were more that got removed by Amazon – I’ll be petitioning Amazon to remove them as well) and 4 of them were bad reviews. As a matter of fact, she was kinder to me than she was several others. Thank you for that, Ms. Nasty-pants.
I received another really bad 1-star review yesterday. Again, I clicked on the reviewer’s name to find 54 reviews, at least 50 of them were 1-star, horrible reviews. Why? I’m assuming just to be nasty.

Question – wouldn’t a normal person who does not like a book stop a chapter into it if they do not like it? Why would they waste any time on it? And more so why would they waste anymore time to review it? Answer – I’m again assuming just to be nasty.

Reviewer #2 read many books in the Military Romance genre, hating them all per her review. Again, why does this person continue to read this genre?

The biggest problem with these Serial Negative Reviewers is that other readers may not know these reviews are being left by someone who repeatedly does this, and it could negatively and wrongly impact the sale of books. I know what you are thinking, there are plenty of other good reviews to offset this, but doesn’t the bad always impact a person more than the good?

As a reader looking for a new book to read, how much do you take these reviews to heart in making your decision to read a book or not? I’m curious. Please, either comment on this post, use the contact form on this website, or email me with your thoughts at: [email protected]

I’d really like to hear from you on this! Back to writing for me. I am nearly done with book 2 in the Shepherd Security series, Operation Recruited Angel.

Our military members are special! I honor all past, present, and future members of our military with my stories. Salute the flag, stand for our national anthem, and thank a Vet for their service. Freedom is not free, a lot of people sacrificed for the freedoms we enjoy.

Don’t ever forget!

Well, I don't really care for bad reviews, especially for authors I love. I will read anything by one of these even if it gets a bad review and most of the time I still like the book, so there...

If somebody becomes a serial bad reviews poster (!) this person should change the kind of books he/she reads, yes. Or maybe have a really long talk with a shrink! These people need help.

Reading is my favourite occupation and please, keep your books coming!

I never bother reading 1 star reviews. Generally the person has an axe to grind. They may not have even bothered to read the book. They may be protesting a type of books on religious grounds or because they are vegan, not enough or too much sex, etc. I skim 5 star reviews because often they dont really tell me much but they will give an idea of the book, 4 star reviews will often tell me more of what I want to know. Is the plot good? Is the writing good but needs better editing etc. Just remember people with extreme reviews are more likely telling you more about them than your book! A book would have to be really bad for me to bother wasting my time writing a 1 star review.
